Skipping breakfast vs. that doughnut in the morning meeting?
Look, you know we’ll tell you a healthy breakfast (low in fat, high in fiber and protein) is ideal. But if a doughnut is all you’ve got going, it’s better than starving, which sets you up to overeat later and trains your body to store fat, say SELF contributing experts Stephanie Clarke, R.D., and Willow Jarosh, R.D. Grab the plain glazed (260 calories) and have it with a small nonfat cappucino (80 calories) or plain skim milk; the protein will counter the blood sugar spike and dip that doughnut is bound to trigger. If you’re always eating on the fly, stock up on healthy portables like Kind bars and nonfat Greek yogurt.
Sleeping in contacts at a surprise hookup’s place vs. storing ’em in a cup of water
Keep them in. “Potentially, parasites in tap water could cause blindness,” says Sandra Belmont, M.D., clinical associate professor of ophthalmology at NYU Langone Medical Center. Wearing contacts overnight isn’t risk-free, either—it could lead to an eye infection or, oddly, an ulcer on your eyeball (treatable, but still!). For next time: Stash a tiny vial of preservative-free lubricating drops like Refresh in your clutch. To prevent lenses from sticking, use them before bed, during your 3 a.m. pee trip and when you get up.
A half-assed 10-second brushing vs. a 10-second mouthwash swish?
Mouthwash may make you feel nice and minty fresh, but using it isn’t effective if you don’t brush, too, according to Chicago-based dentist Rana Stino, D.D.S. Here’s why: You need the friction of toothbrush bristles to scrub plaque, food debris and bacteria off teeth. Plus, most mouthwashes contain alcohol, which can dry out your mouth and, funnily enough, cause bad breath. So a quick brush wins but still isn’t great. Soft scrubbing for a full two minutes is way more effective at fighting cavities and gum disease, Dr. Stino says. And honestly, we’re talking an extra minute or two here—will it really get you that far off schedule?
